Elemental
AX.GAN.13.04 - Elemental
Elemental threats arise when the raw power underlying the Kin traditions manifests without direction. Unlike a Kin practitioner performing controlled tradition-work, an unbound elemental manifestation has no practitioner behind it, no governing Attribute, no Pattern Fatigue management, no intent beyond the elemental imperative that defines it. It does not negotiate. It does not respond to social dynamics. It pursues the expression of its nature until it is contained, dissipated, or destroyed.
Causes of unbound manifestation: - A Kin practitioner's tradition work catastrophically fails while Pattern Fatigued (Backlash at Threshold 5+, Severe category, see AX.GAN.09.03–06) - Ancient elemental energy accumulates in a location with significant tradition history and ruptures without a practitioner catalyst - Blasted Reach fissure pressure builds in territory where Kin elemental traditions have been practiced for generations, producing a hybrid elemental-Scar manifestation (see Scar Elemental, below) - World Gate residual energy interacts with a concentrated elemental site
Resolution options: Elemental threats can be contained rather than destroyed. A sufficiently skilled tradition practitioner can attempt to disperse or redirect an unbound elemental using their own tradition's mechanics, generally, this requires matching the elemental's category (Force, Resonance, Form) and succeeding on a Governing Attribute + Tradition pool roll against a Threshold equal to the elemental's power level (Standard = Threshold 3; Elite = Threshold 4). This is a challenging operation and should feel like one.
The elemental's origin culture is often its best lead for containment. An Ashari community whose forge-site produced an Unbound Fire-Surge knows more about containing it than anyone else.
UNBOUND FIRE-SURGE (Standard)
A spontaneous Force-category fire manifestation, what happens when elemental fire has no practitioner.
The Unbound Fire-Surge is what Ashari tradition practitioners describe as "fire that forgot it had a purpose." It forms when concentrated Elemental Fire tradition energy ruptures without direction, near a forge where an Ashari practitioner suffered a Severe Backlash, at a sacred fire-site that has accumulated generations of tradition use, or wherever the Fire primordial's energy concentrates without the steady management of living practice. It is not a creature in the ecological sense. It is a fire that has become a problem.
The Surge's manifestation is recognizable to any Ashari: an intensifying heat distortion, a roaring that carries no wind, flame patterns that move against logic. Nearby Ashari experience instinctive distress; this is tradition energy out of proper form, and their attunement registers it as wrong.
Type: Elemental (Fire, Force Category, Unbound) | Power Level: Standard | Size: Medium (variable, expands when fueled, contracts when deprived)
Attributes - Body: 3D | Speed: 2D | Wit: 2D
Talents - Strike: 2D (fire projection) - Fortitude: 2D - Notice: 1D
Combat Statistics - Health: 33 (20 + Body 3 + Standard Modifier 10) - Defense: 1 (Speed 2 + Armor 0 = 2 ÷ 3 = 0.67, round to 0, +1 base = 1) - Armor: None (no physical form to armor)
Saves - Body Save: 5D (Body 3D + Fortitude 2D) - Speed Save: 2D (Speed 2D + Acrobatics 0D) - Wit Save: 2D (Wit 2D + Resolve 0D)
Attacks - Fire Projection: Body 3D + Strike 2D = 5D vs Defense, 3–4 fire damage typical - Engulf (Special, see below)
Elemental Traits - Fire Body: Made of living fire. Immune to all fire damage and all heat-based effects, including Hearthblade activation and Elemental Fire tradition attacks. Water (Mirelen tradition, Resonance) deals double damage. Heavy rainfall or submersion ends the Surge immediately. - Fire Immunity: As above. - Water Vulnerability: Water attacks and water-based suppression deal double damage and impose −2D to all rolls on the Surge for one Turn. - Environmental Aura: All creatures within Close range of the Surge take 2 fire damage at the start of their Turn from ambient heat. Combustible materials in the area ignite after 1D3 Turns of proximity.
Special Abilities - Engulf: Primary Action. The Surge attempts to surround a target within Touch range. Target makes a Speed Save Threshold 3 or becomes Immobilized inside the Surge, no movement; takes 4 fire damage at the start of each Turn; attacks against the engulfed target have Advantage. The Surge cannot use Fire Projection while Engulfing a target. The engulfed target may attempt to break free with a Body Save Threshold 3 (Primary Action); others may attack the Surge to force it to release (any single attack dealing 8+ damage causes immediate release). - Fuel Seeking: The Surge moves toward combustible material each Turn as a Free Action if no direct target is engaging it. Structures, vegetation, and stored goods are all valid fuel sources. This is not tactical intelligence; it is elemental imperative. - Tradition Resonance: Any use of Elemental Fire tradition within Near range of the Surge adds +1D to the Surge's next attack roll (the unbound energy responds to related tradition-work). Elemental Earth workings within the same range deal 3 damage to the Surge (earth smothers fire).
Tactics The Unbound Fire-Surge does not have tactics in the intelligent sense. It projects fire at the nearest creature, pursues combustible materials when not actively threatened, and attempts Engulf against any creature that remains within Touch range. It will not pursue fleeing targets beyond the immediate area; it has no objective beyond the expression of its elemental nature in the location where it formed.
Containment An Ashari practitioner may attempt containment (rather than destruction) by channeling Elemental Fire tradition in a specific counter-pattern, essentially "giving the surge a shape" that it settles into and eventually dissipates through. This requires: not Pattern Fatigued; Governing Attribute + Elemental Fire pool at Threshold 4; success draws the Surge's energy into a controlled expression that dissipates over the following hour without further damage. On failure, the practitioner takes 5 fire damage from the energy backlash and the attempt cannot be tried again for one hour.
Lore & Ecology Surges persist until fuel or oxygen is exhausted, until contained by tradition-work, or until destroyed. Large Surges in well-fueled environments (deep forest, a forge district) can sustain themselves for days and grow substantially larger than Medium size, for each 4 hours of sustained existence in good fuel conditions, the Surge's Health increases by 10 and its Environmental Aura radius doubles. The Ashari's fire-management practices developed, in part, because their ancestors knew what an uncontained Surge eventually becomes.
SCAR ELEMENTAL (Elite)
A Blasted Reach fissure eruption given form by the intersection of elemental energy and Scar corruption, neither purely natural nor purely Blackened.
The Scar Elemental emerges where the Blasted Reach's active fissures intersect with territory where Kin traditions have been practiced for generations. The fissure's pressure, the tradition's residual energy, and the slowly-expanding presence of Murin create a manifestation that is none of its component parts distinctly. It is not an undead creature; it is not Turned, it is not infected. It is elemental energy that has absorbed Scar corruption and expresses both simultaneously.
Scar Elementals are among the most dangerous encounters in Reach-margin territory precisely because they don't fit the available response frameworks. They are not contained by standard elemental-containment practice (the Scar energy resists tradition-work of its own category). They are not affected by the sunlight vulnerability that limits the Blackened. They are emergent threats from the intersection of the Reach's expanding influence and the Third Era's settled elemental-practice landscape.
Type: Elemental (Scar-Fused, mixed category, see below) | Power Level: Elite | Size: Large
Attributes - Body: 4D | Speed: 2D | Wit: 3D
Talents - Strike: 3D - Fortitude: 3D - Attunement: 2D (Scar energy, not a catalogued tradition; this represents the Elemental's innate Scar-reading capability) - Resolve: 2D
Combat Statistics - Health: 39 (20 + Body 4 + Elite Modifier 15) - Defense: 1 (Speed 2 + Armor 0 = 2 ÷ 3 = 0.67, round to 0, +1 base = 1), The Scar Elemental compensates through Health, regeneration, and damage resistance rather than evasion - Armor: None
Saves - Body Save: 7D (Body 4D + Fortitude 3D) - Speed Save: 2D (Speed 2D + Acrobatics 0D) - Wit Save: 5D (Wit 3D + Resolve 2D)
Attacks - Scar Strike: Body 4D + Strike 3D = 7D vs Defense, 5–6 damage typical; living tissue struck by the Scar Elemental feels a cold that doesn't come from temperature, see Scar Burn below - Fissure Pulse: Wit 3D + Attunement 2D = 5D, all creatures within Near range make a Speed Save Threshold 3 or knocked Prone and take 3 damage (ground ruptures under elemental influence)
Elemental Traits - Scar Body: Not composed of mundane matter. Immune to non-magical physical damage (standard weapons deal 1 damage maximum per hit, regardless of successes). Tradition-based attacks deal full damage. The Scar Elemental has no specific elemental immunity; it is resistant to all mundane sources equally. - Mixed Category: The Scar Elemental defies tradition category containment. Elemental containment attempts using a single Kin tradition have Disadvantage. A practitioner who can access two different elemental traditions simultaneously (or two tradition practitioners coordinating through Formation Working, AX.GAN.09.07) may attempt containment at standard Threshold. - Environmental Aura: The ground within Near range of the Scar Elemental becomes Difficult Terrain, cracked, shifting, fissure-prone. Characters moving through this area must make a Speed Save Threshold 2 or Prone.
Special Abilities - Scar Burn: Any creature damaged by the Scar Strike must make a Body Save Threshold 3 or gain the Staggered condition (−2D Body pools, movement halved, until Long Rest). This is not Murin infection; it is raw Scar energy disrupting physiology. It cannot be treated as Murin infection and does not progress; it simply persists until natural recovery. - Fissure Anchor: The Scar Elemental cannot be destroyed outside the proximity of an active fissure, if reduced to 0 Health more than Near distance from an active fissure, it dissipates temporarily and re-forms at the nearest active fissure after 24 hours. To permanently destroy a Scar Elemental, it must be reduced to 0 Health within Touch range of an active fissure that is simultaneously closed (blocked from releasing pressure) by appropriate tradition-work. Kyne Daas Scar-reading expertise identifies which fissures are active and how to close them. - Scar Sense: The Elemental detects all active Scar fissures within Far range as a passive sense, and any creature with Scar-related abilities or infection at the same range.
Tactics The Scar Elemental moves toward concentrations of tradition energy or biological heat; it is drawn to living creatures the way Surges are drawn to combustible material. It uses Fissure Pulse to break up organized groups, then uses Scar Strike on the closest target. It does not flee and does not respond to social pressure. The encounter is a resource problem: how much damage can the party sustain before they discover the fissure-anchoring mechanism and either destroy or contain it?
Containment Permanent resolution requires: 1. A Kyne Daas Reach Reader (or any character with Scar Awareness, AX.GAN.09.01) to identify and locate the anchoring active fissure 2. Tradition-work to close the fissure; this requires either Kyne Daas Scar-reading techniques or sufficiently powerful elemental tradition work (Earth or Water, Threshold 4, closes the pressure release) 3. Reducing the Elemental to 0 Health while within Touch range of the now-closing fissure
Each step is a challenge under time pressure from an Elite threat actively disrupting the operation.
Adventure Hooks
The Forge Silent, An Ashari forge-site near a Reach margin has gone quiet. No workers have emerged for two days. The Ashari community is certain something went wrong during a significant tradition working, the forge was attempting something at the edge of their collective capacity. What they're less certain about is whether anyone is still alive in there, and whether what's in there with them is still what they started.
The Growing Cold, Kyne Daas scouts have been tracking an expanding cold zone near a historically Zephari seasonal camp, an area of seasonal Air tradition practice for several generations. Something in the intersection of that accumulated tradition-energy and the expanding Reach boundary has gone wrong. The cold zone is growing. Two Zephari who went to investigate haven't returned.
Fissure Season, Three active fissures have erupted simultaneously in the same league of territory, and something is moving between them. A Reach Reader who attempted to close the first fissure has gone into hiding and refuses to explain exactly what they encountered. The Scar Awareness perk suggests the manifestation is unlike anything in the Kyne Daas observational record.
