Overview

Blood Sense

AX.GHW.08.04

The Dhampir carries predator's awareness as a birthright. The bloodline's oldest tools, reading a room, sensing vitality, knowing instinctively who in a crowd is weakest, who is afraid, who is not quite human, arrived with the lineage and don't require instruction. Most Dhampir live with these tools as background features of their experience, the way other people live with peripheral vision or the capacity to recognize faces. They are present. They are useful. They are not, by themselves, a tradition.

Blood Sense is what a Dhampir looks like when they decide to go further.

The formalized practice takes the bloodline's passive capacities and extends them into deliberate instruments: reading vitality at range with precision rather than impression, identifying what a subject is at the biological and supernatural level rather than just how dangerous they seem, establishing the kind of predatory tracking bond that the bloodline evolved for hunting over generations rather than casual proximity.

Most Dhampir don't develop Blood Sense. The passive version is already more social information than most people want, and formalizing it means choosing to be more of what the bloodline made them, not less. The ones who do develop it tend to make the choice for one of two reasons: they need the capacity for work they've decided to do, or they have accepted what they are thoroughly enough that deepening it feels like honesty rather than compromise.

Non-Dhampir practitioners of Blood Sense are effectively nonexistent. The tradition requires the bloodline's biological substrate, the specific resonance between predator's physiology and living targets that the vampire lineage produces. Another practitioner might approximate some individual applications through other traditions, but Blood Sense as a unified practice belongs to the bloodline.

System Integration

Blood Sense as an Odd Talent

Blood Sense functions as an Odd Talent per AX.C.04. Standard rules apply:

  • The roll is: Governing Attribute + Blood Sense (+ Focus if applicable)
  • Blood Sense dice are purchased from the Talent budget at character creation, or improved through Advancement at standard cost (Governing Attribute × 2 XP for a new Tradition at 1D; current value × 2 XP to improve)
  • Maximum Tradition rating: 5D. Maximum Focus rating: 3D
  • All three Expressions draw on the same Odd Talent pool

Governing Attribute

The governing Attribute is chosen at character creation and is permanent.

Expression Common Choice Reasoning
Sense Wit (default) or Body Wit for interpretive, analytic reading; Body for visceral, somatic awareness
Mark Wit Reading requires interpretation, Body-governed practitioners work harder here
Bond Wit or Body Wit for precision and distance; Body for intensity and durability

Most Dhampir choose Wit, the bloodline's predator awareness is primarily analytical, reading a room rather than physically responding to it. Body-governed Blood Sense is a different practice: more instinctive, more uncomfortable, more difficult to use in social contexts. It produces stronger Bonds and more reliable Sense in close-range physical situations, at the cost of precision in reading nuance.

Access

Dhampir Lineage Affinity: Dhampir who receive Profession access to Blood Sense begin with 1D at no additional cost. The Lineage provides Access, a complimentary Profession is required to receive the 1D.

Profession Access: Any Profession listed as granting Blood Sense access access provides the option to spend Talent dice to learn and improve the Power.

Independent Study: Not available. Blood Sense requires the Dhampir bloodline. No other lineage provides the biological substrate, and no amount of study replicates it.

Mechanics Summary

Feature Detail
Tradition Category Resonance, perception and influence through the bloodline's predator awareness
Default Attribute Wit
Action Type Primary Action (most effects); Free Action (passive awareness extensions)
Signature Feel Everything alive tells you something. This tradition is about deciding how much to listen.
Lineage Affinity Dhampir only (Independent Study not available)
Signature Focus The Hunt Token
Expressions Sense, Mark, Bond

Threshold Scale:

Threshold Scale of Effect
1 Minor; brief; surface awareness of a single target; passive impression
2 Standard; deliberate reading of one target within Near range; scene-relevant detail
3 Significant; deep reading or range extension; multiple targets; establishing a Bond
4 Major; Bond at long range; reading at scale; detailed supernatural nature assessment
5+ Profound; tracking across distances; Bond that persists across scenes; deep lineage reading

Access and Cross-Lineage Notes

Dhampir practitioners: This is the lineage tradition. No other path to it exists. A Dhampir who develops Blood Sense to 3D+ has committed to a version of what they are that most Dhampir avoid; they have accepted the predator's awareness as a primary tool rather than an uncomfortable background feature. The hidden world reads this choice in how they operate.

Vampire targets: Blood Sense applied to vampires is complicated. Vampires carry the bloodline that Dhampir descend from, which means the perceptual frequency overlaps in ways that make both Sense and Mark harder to perform on vampires specifically (Threshold +1 for all Blood Sense applications against vampires) and considerably more impactful when successful, the practitioner is essentially reading their own ancestry's apex expression, and what they learn about a vampire's history and capacity tends to be detailed.

Dhampir and Mediumship: A Dhampir who develops both Blood Sense and Mediumship is operating with two Traditions, which requires specific multi-Tradition access from a Progression Track or extraordinary circumstance. Mechanically this works, the two traditions are distinct Odd Talents governing different channels. Fictionally, a Dhampir who perceives both the living through blood and the dead through the liminal is an unusual and somewhat unsettling combination. The hidden world tends to notice.
