Core Lineage Templates

AX.C.06.03 - Core Lineage Templates

The following five lineages are genre-neutral templates suitable for use with the core rules in any setting. They are defined by biological and cognitive trait clusters rather than cultural identity, making them equally functional in fantasy, modern, and sci-fi Genre Catalogs.

Genre Catalogs may rename, reskin, or extend any of these lineages to fit their setting. The mechanical benefits remain consistent regardless of the fiction applied to them.

Each lineage entry notes any structural variation from the standard three-component format (Health Modifier + Cultural Talent + Perk or Special Ability).

AX.C.06.03.01 - Apex

A lineage shaped by predator biology, heightened senses, physical dominance, and an instinct for identifying weakness in others. Apex lineages have evolved or been cultivated in environments where awareness and lethality are survival prerequisites.

  • Health Modifier: +2 per Fortitude advancement
  • Cultural Talent: Notice +1D
  • Special Ability: Natural Weapon

Natural Weapon | Inherited | Always active

The Apex lineage possesses a natural weapon, claws, reinforced limbs, a crushing bite, or similar biological feature. This weapon functions as a Close range Physical attack dealing damage equal to successes rolled, identical to a standard melee attack. The natural weapon cannot be disarmed or destroyed. It requires no action to deploy.

Genre Note: Claws and natural strikes in a fantasy setting. Reinforced bone structure and striking capability in a modern setting. Engineered combat appendages or a predator-strain biological heritage in a sci-fi setting.

AX.C.06.03.02 - Resilient

A lineage defined by stress-adapted biology, the product of generations surviving environments or conditions that would break less adapted bodies. Resilient lineages absorb damage that would incapacitate others and recover faster than their companions expect.

  • Health Modifier: +4 per Fortitude advancement
  • Cultural Talent: Fortitude +1D

Structural Note: The Resilient lineage provides a larger Health Modifier than standard (+4 vs. the typical +1 to +2 range) in place of a Perk or Special Ability. The investment is entirely in durability, Resilient characters are significantly harder to bring down but gain no extraordinary capability beyond their biological toughness.

AX.C.06.03.03 - Quickborn

A lineage defined by accelerated neural processing, faster reflexes, sharper situational awareness, and an instinctive ability to read and respond to a changing environment before others have registered the change.

  • Health Modifier: None
  • Cultural Talents: Acrobatics +1D and Notice +1D

Structural Note: The Quickborn lineage provides two Cultural Talents instead of one, and no Health Modifier. Quickborn characters are perceptive and physically reactive but carry no biological buffer against harm. A Quickborn character with low Body investment will be notably fragile; this is intentional and reflects the lineage's specialization toward speed over resilience.

AX.C.06.03.04 - Longkin

A lineage characterized by extended lifespan and the deep accumulation of knowledge and pattern recognition that comes with it. Longkin do not perceive time the way shorter-lived lineages do, their decision-making is shaped by a vast archive of observed experience.

  • Health Modifier: +1 per Fortitude advancement
  • Cultural Talent: Lore +1D
  • Perks: Deep Memory + Expanded Focus

Structural Note: The Longkin lineage provides two smaller Perks in place of one standard Perk. Neither alone is as powerful as a full Special Ability, but together they represent a meaningful depth of accumulated expertise.

Deep Memory | Inherited | Once per session

Once per session, the Longkin character may pose one specific, direct question about a subject within the scope of their accumulated experience, history, natural phenomena, cultural practices, organizational structures, or any field their character has had time to observe across a long life. The GM answers honestly with the most accurate information the character would plausibly have retained. This is not magical knowledge, it is the product of a very long memory applied to the question at hand.

Limit: Once per session.

Expanded Focus | Inherited | Always active

At character creation, the Longkin character receives one additional Talent Focus of their choice at 1D, beyond those granted by their Generation Package. This Focus does not cost Talent dice from the package; it represents a narrow area of expertise developed over a lifetime before the character's story began.

AX.C.06.03.05 - Adaptive

A lineage with no single biological peak, instead, an exceptional capacity to develop in whatever direction their environment demands. Adaptive lineages are generalists by nature, capable of filling roles that more specialized lineages cannot.

  • Health Modifier: +2 per Fortitude advancement
  • Cultural Talent: Any one non-combat Talent of the player's choice at character creation (+1D)
  • Perk: Flexible Trait

Structural Note: The Adaptive lineage provides player-chosen benefits at both the Cultural Talent and Perk stages. This makes it the most flexible lineage in the library and the best demonstration of the lineage system's range. Players who are uncertain which lineage to choose, or who have a specific character concept that no other lineage supports, should consider Adaptive.

Flexible Trait | Inherited | Always active

At character creation, choose one Inherited Perk from AX.C.09.01. The chosen perk is granted permanently as a lineage trait; it is always active and cannot be lost, suppressed, or traded. The chosen perk should reflect the character's specific biological heritage within the Adaptive lineage.

Example

  • A character from an aquatic branch of the Adaptive lineage might choose Aquatic Movement.
  • A character from a low-light environment branch might choose Low-Light Vision.
  • A character from a high-altitude or toxic environment branch might choose Environmental Resistance.

The GM may restrict the available Inherited Perks to those appropriate to the setting or the specific Adaptive heritage the player is describing.
