NVS Professions
Professions
Syndicate Fixer
"You need something. I know someone who has it, someone who needs it moved, and someone who will pay more than you're thinking. Give me an hour."
Role: The NVS's commercial fulcrum, specialists in finding, connecting, and closing. The Syndicate Fixer operates across the full Crossroads economy: people, equipment, information, access, contracts, introductions. They are the profession that makes the NVS's decentralized network function as a coherent commercial entity rather than a chaos of unconnected transactions.
| Favored Save | Wit, deal-making pressure; resist social manipulation and deliberate confusion from counterparties who understand the Fixer is reading them; sustain analytical clarity through extended negotiation |
| Power Access | None, the Syndicate Fixer's capability is relational and informational; their network is the infrastructure |
| Key Talents | Persuade (Wit), Deceive (Wit), Notice (Wit) |
| Signature Focus | High-Spec NVS Smartphone, the Fixer's primary operational tool: a commercially available device running NVS priority network access, aggregating market data, personnel contact databases, and real-time commercial intelligence. +1D to Notice rolls involving digital information gathering, public records, market data, social media, commercial activity monitoring. Additionally, once per scene as a Free Action, pull real-time commercial intelligence on a named entity without a roll: current market position, known org affiliations, publicly registered professional history, and recent commercial activity visible in NVS monitoring systems. For information requiring aggregation from non-public sources, roll Wit + Technical vs Threshold 2. The Smartphone is commercially available; the NVS Priority Network access requires active Syndicate standing and is revoked on commercial blacklisting. |
Progression Track
| Stage | Perk | Source | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Syndicate Vouching | Setting AX.GIL.08.02, Faction Authority | Session |
| 2 | Deep Knowledge | AX.C.09.02, Expertise | Scene |
| 3 | Faction Pull | AX.C.09.02, Organizational | Full Rest |
Stage 1, Syndicate Vouching: Invoke NVS network standing to open NVS-affiliated vendor networks (above-market supply access, restricted equipment at 15% premium), one safe house in the current region, and one trip via NVS freight or logistics channels for the session. Creates an obligation in the NVS ledger, the nature and weight of what was accessed determines the eventual call-in. Once per session.
Stage 2, Deep Knowledge: Once per scene, before making a Talent roll, ask the GM one specific, direct question about the task, target, or environment. The GM answers honestly based on professional expertise. For a Syndicate Fixer, Deep Knowledge most often precedes a Persuade or Notice roll, "What does this party actually need from this deal that they haven't stated?" or "Is there a competing offer in play that I don't know about?", information that transforms a negotiation.
Stage 3, Faction Pull: Call in a significant NVS organizational resource, a commercial intervention from senior Syndicate backing (a formal NVS endorsement that changes the negotiation's power balance), emergency access to restricted supply chains for a time-critical need, a coordinated market play that shifts conditions in the current region, or a network-wide call for a specific person or piece of equipment that the Fixer cannot locate through standard channels. The Syndicate notes what was called in and bills it eventually. Once per Full Rest.
Roleplay Notes
The Syndicate Fixer's professional advantage is the speed of their information processing. By the time a Linden-Green Arbiter has reviewed the second contingency, the Fixer has already identified who in the room is the decision-maker, what they need that isn't on the table, and which of the three things they said they wanted is the one they actually want. This is not intuition; it is professional pattern recognition applied at NVS velocity.
Their Deceive investment is positional rather than personal. The Fixer is not a dishonest person; they are a person whose professional context requires presenting information in configurations calibrated for specific audiences. The deal that is good for everyone looks different when described to the LGT partner than it does when described to the BVHI subcontractor. The Fixer knows both descriptions and delivers each one without hesitation.
The Smartphone's intelligence pull is the mechanic that backs the Fixer's table reputation for knowing things. When a Syndicate Fixer says "I know about your Q3 situation," they have usually just run a 30-second pull on the entity's commercial activity. The information is real; the implication that they knew before the conversation started is cultivated.
Human Lineage Interaction: A Human Syndicate Fixer's The Hustle die most naturally assigns to Persuade or Notice, the two core professional Talents where a prior-career depth creates meaningful advantage. A Fixer who was a Linden-Green trained paralegal before pivoting to NVS commercial work carries that background in their Hustle die as a Lore investment that opens different rooms.
Unaffiliated Template
Freelance: The most natural expression. A Freelance Fixer operates the same commercial function without NVS institutional backing, their Syndicate Vouching becomes Open Market Standing (independent professional credentials that open vendor relationships without NVS account access), and their Stage 3 Faction Pull becomes Jurisdictional Ambiguity (legal protection for operating across multiple org jurisdictions without fixed affiliation). The network still works; it's narrower.
Mercenary: A Fixer who sells their network access and deal-closing capability to specific clients rather than operating as an independent commercial node. Scope of Engagement at Stage 2 formalizes the per-contract authority that each client engagement grants them. Reputation Ledger at Stage 3 is the career-long record of successful closings, the only credential that matters in the Crossroads market.
Kinetic Auditor
"This district is at Stressed. If something Harmonically significant happens in the next four hours, we're looking at Critical. You should factor that into whatever you're planning."
Role: NVS field specialists who monitor Entropy levels in Human-heavy districts and manage the real-world consequences of the Kinetic Debt, the harmonic instability generated by NVS hyper-growth. The Kinetic Auditor is the profession that acknowledges, operationally if not publicly, that the NVS's expansion model has costs that must be actively managed.
| Favored Save | Body, physical field monitoring in unstable Entropy zones where reality instability creates direct physical hazards; resistance to the environmental harm that Collapsing-state Entropy produces |
| Power Access | None, the Kinetic Auditor reads and responds to Entropy states through technical monitoring rather than Harmonic practice; the Gauge provides the detection capability without requiring Tradition access |
| Key Talents | Attunement (Wit), Athletics (Body), Notice (Wit), Axiom-Stress Focus |
| Signature Focus | Axiom-Stress Gauge, a proprietary NVS instrument that reads localized Entropy states through passive harmonic resonance detection, calibrated specifically for Kinetic Debt signatures. The Gauge makes the Entropy Signature perk's passive state assessment available without a roll, the Auditor always knows the current Entropy state of their immediate environment (updated once per Turn in active situations, once per scene in stable conditions). The active source vector identification still requires a roll (Wit + Attunement vs Threshold 2 as a Minor Action). Alert function: when the Entropy state shifts in either direction, the Gauge signals as a Free Action, the Auditor is never caught unaware by an escalation. Additionally, in Stressed or Critical Entropy environments, the Gauge provides +1D to all Athletics rolls, the Auditor's familiarity with operating in degraded harmonic conditions translates to physical competence in the specific ways those conditions manifest. |
Progression Track
| Stage | Perk | Source | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Entropy Signature | Setting AX.GIL.08.02, Setting Expertise | Short Rest |
| 2 | Second Wind | AX.C.09.02, Recovery | Long Rest |
| 3 | Collapse Containment | Setting AX.GIL.08.02, Setting Expertise | Full Rest |
Stage 1, Entropy Signature: Assess local Entropy state passively, no roll required for basic state (Stable / Stressed / Critical / Collapsing). Identify Entropy source vector with a Minor Action roll: Wit + Attunement vs Threshold 2. The Axiom-Stress Gauge makes the passive assessment automatic and continuous; the perk defines what the assessment reveals and what can be done with it. Detailed Entropy state table in AX.GIL.08.02. Source vector identification once per Short Rest.
Stage 2, Second Wind: As a Minor Action during combat or active Entropy response, recover 2D6 Health immediately. Does not require a rest; may be used while in initiative order. Once per Long Rest. For a Kinetic Auditor operating in Collapsing Entropy zones, where environmental damage is continuous and medical support is not present, this represents the physical conditioning that keeps them functional through the part of the job that is actively trying to kill them.
Stage 3, Collapse Containment: As a Primary Action, roll Wit + Attunement vs Threshold 4. On success, all Collapse effects (spatial anomalies, area-wide tech failure, harmonic discharge events) in a Near-range area are suppressed for the scene. Technology functions normally; Tradition Thresholds return to standard. The Collapse is held, not resolved, the Kinetic Debt source remains, and the area returns to Critical at scene end. On failed roll: partial field, reduce Collapsing to Critical for one Turn then re-escalate. On Critical Failure (Wild Die Implosion, zero successes): the containment attempt adds harmonic energy, Collapse escalates to next severity immediately. If the Auditor has the Human Kinetic Modifier, this roll includes the Kinetic Die; Kinetic Explosion extends suppression an additional scene. Once per Full Rest. (Full rules: AX.GIL.08.02, Collapse Containment)
Roleplay Notes
The Kinetic Auditor is the NVS's institutional acknowledgment that the Kinetic Debt is real, which, given that the Kinetic Debt is officially a secret, puts them in an unusual position. Their job description is framed in terms of "Entropy monitoring and stabilization services for Human commercial districts," which is accurate and says nothing about the NVS's illegal Gnomish sub-routines or the fact that the Entropy they are monitoring is the direct consequence of the org's growth model.
A Kinetic Auditor who pieces this together, and a senior one almost certainly will, faces a character-defining decision about what to do with the knowledge. The NVS's internal culture strongly discourages asking why the Entropy districts exist. The Auditor's professional competence and the org secret they've stumbled into are two sides of the same discovery.
Their Athletics investment reflects the physical reality of Entropy fieldwork. A Critical-state Entropy zone has spatial anomalies, intermittent tech failure, and harmonic discharge events that manifest physically. Moving through one effectively requires physical conditioning specific to unstable environmental terrain. The Gauge's Athletics bonus in Stressed/Critical environments is the accumulated competence of a professional who has done this work in the field long enough to know where to plant their feet.
Human Lineage Interaction: A Human Kinetic Auditor who also acquires Harmonic Tradition access (via independent study or cross-org secondment) carries the Kinetic Modifier into their professional monitoring work. The Kinetic Modifier's Implosion on Attunement-adjacent Tradition rolls is particularly relevant in high-Entropy environments where the Auditor is actively managing instability with a nervous system that is itself contributing to local harmonic volatility. This is the profession where the Kinetic Modifier feels most thematically coherent.

Freelance: A Freelance Kinetic Auditor provides Entropy monitoring and stabilization services for communities, orgs, and governing bodies that need independent assessment, including communities that the NVS's internal monitoring has deprioritized, or regions where NVS-affiliated Entropy data carries obvious conflict-of-interest concerns. Open Market Standing provides the professional credentials to operate; Jurisdictional Ambiguity at Stage 3 is the legal protection that makes independent Entropy certification viable when NVS would prefer the data stayed internal.
Outcast: A Kinetic Auditor removed from NVS standing, often, one who documented Entropy source vectors accurately enough to implicate the NVS's sub-routine network and was removed before the report could be filed. Their Entropy assessment capability is unchanged. Ghost Credentials on older NVS monitoring infrastructure may still transmit their readings to NVS systems they've been removed from. Institutional Memory covers the Kinetic Debt's real scope across the regions they monitored.
Venture Scout
"I've been there. Here's what it looked like six weeks ago, what the resource density is, and who thinks they own it. None of those three things is accurate anymore, but it's a start."
Role: NVS advance reconnaissance specialists who identify Free-Trade Zones, unclaimed resource territories, and commercial opportunities before any other org has formally staked a position. The Venture Scout moves first, covering territory that is on no org's current priority list, generating the ground-truth intelligence that the NVS's commercial apparatus needs to decide where to move next.
| Favored Save | Speed, field survival and extraction from territories that are contested, unmapped, or actively hostile; the operational reality that a Venture Scout who has been identified in a territory that multiple orgs are watching needs to be somewhere else immediately |
| Power Access | None, the Venture Scout's capability is observational, navigational, and physical; their intelligence is gathered from the ground, not from Harmonic systems |
| Key Talents | Notice (Wit), Pilot (Speed), Athletics (Body) |
| Signature Focus | Long-Range Survey Drone, a high-endurance, high-altitude reconnaissance platform with an operational range significantly beyond standard commercial drone specifications. The Drone runs on a Halfling-adjacent low-signature harmonic substrate that minimizes its NTC network footprint, it does not transmit a standard device registration and produces no readable signal to routine Network Presence monitoring. +2D to all Pilot rolls when operating the Drone in reconnaissance configuration. Passive sensor package: the Drone's sensor suite includes low-fidelity Axiomatic resonance detection, detecting the presence of active Harmonic Traditions within its sweep range without identifying Tradition type (identifying type requires a Technical roll vs Threshold 2 from the Scout while reviewing the Drone's telemetry). Operational ceiling: the Drone operates at altitudes that put it above standard org surveillance coverage; its optical and resonance resolution at that altitude requires specific Technical expertise to interpret accurately. |
Progression Track
| Stage | Perk | Source | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Specialist (Notice) | AX.C.09.02, Expertise | Always active |
| 2 | Deep Knowledge | AX.C.09.02, Expertise | Scene |
| 3 | Faction Pull | AX.C.09.02, Organizational | Full Rest |
Stage 1, Specialist (Notice): When using Notice in a context directly related to territory assessment, resource identification, threat detection in the field, or surveillance review, treat dice showing 4, 5, or 6 as successes (rather than 5–6 only). Does not affect the Wild Die. For a Venture Scout, professional context is broad: any Notice roll made in the course of active reconnaissance, advance assessment, or territorial survey qualifies.
Stage 2, Deep Knowledge: Once per scene, before making a Talent roll, ask the GM one specific, direct question about the task, target, or environment. The GM answers honestly based on professional expertise. For a Venture Scout, this most often precedes a Notice or Pilot roll in unfamiliar territory: "What's the most significant hazard in this area that isn't visible from my current position?" or "Is this resource deposit the kind that other orgs have already surveyed and chosen not to file on, or genuinely unclaimed?", information that determines whether the operation continues or aborts.
Stage 3, Faction Pull: Call in significant NVS organizational resources, a rapid-deployment commercial team to move on an identified opportunity before the window closes, NVS legal resources to formally stake a Free-Trade Zone claim in real time, extraction support for a Scout who is in a territory that has become actively hostile, or a Syndicate-backed resource assessment team to convert Scout intelligence into commercial-grade territory evaluation. The Syndicate notes what was mobilized and what the Scout's intelligence justified. Once per Full Rest.
Roleplay Notes
The Venture Scout's professional relationship with information is immediate and ground-level; they see the territory before anyone else does, which means they are also the first to discover that the territory is more complicated than the prior-intelligence suggested. A Scout who has operated in genuinely unmapped territory develops a specific comfort with revision: their first assessment is always provisional, the second is better, and the third is close enough to act on.
Their Athletics investment reflects the operational reality that pre-commercial territory is not always navigable by vehicle. The Survey Drone extends their observational reach significantly, but understanding what the Drone is showing them requires physical presence in adjacent terrain, and extracting from a contested position requires physical capability the Drone cannot provide.
The Drone's low-signature harmonic substrate is a deliberate design choice rather than a standard commercial specification, the NVS paid for a drone that other orgs' monitoring infrastructure has difficulty tracking, which tells you something about the territories the NVS asks Venture Scouts to operate in.
Human Lineage Interaction: A Human Venture Scout's Philosophy of Now creates an interesting tension with the reconnaissance role, which rewards patience and systematic observation. The most effective Human Scouts have resolved this by developing extremely fast assessment cycles rather than patient ones; they move faster, observe less per location, and cover more ground, generating broader intelligence at lower depth per site than a non-Human Scout might. The Hustle die most naturally assigns to Notice or Athletics for this profession.
Unaffiliated Template
Freelance: A Freelance Venture Scout sells territory assessment to any org or entity that needs ground-truth intelligence on unmapped or contested regions. Their client base often includes parties who are specifically interested in territories the NVS has assessed and declined, the Scout's prior reconnaissance is valuable precisely because they've seen it firsthand. Open Market Standing at Stage 1 reflects independent survey credentials; the Drone's low-signature design means they can operate in NVS-monitored territory without immediately triggering NVS interest in what they've found.
Off-Grid: A Venture Scout who operates entirely outside org registration, no survey license, no commercial filing, no data trail. They have seen territory that no org's records acknowledge. Grey Space Access at Stage 2 represents the off-network channels they use to move intelligence to clients without creating a formal record of who commissioned the survey or what it found.
Market Disruptor
"This is the same technology. The NTC version costs nine thousand credits. Our version costs sixty-five. You're welcome."
Role: NVS specialists who take high-cost or org-proprietary technology and adapt it for mass-market Human consumption, the professional expression of The Graft at industrial scale. The Market Disruptor reverse-engineers, repackages, licenses aggressively, and occasionally violates Technomantic EULAs to produce the 20-year version of something the NTC is selling on a 200-year depreciation model.
| Favored Save | Wit, rapid technical analysis under commercial pressure; resist deliberate obfuscation in technology documentation; maintain analytical clarity when a counterparty is actively trying to prevent the Disruptor from understanding what they've built |
| Power Access | None, the Market Disruptor's capability is applied technical analysis and commercial engineering; their relationship with Gnomish technology is studied rather than Harmonic |
| Key Talents | Technical (Wit), Technology Adaptation Focus, Lore (Wit), Market Intelligence Focus, Craft (Body) |
| Signature Focus | The "Graft" Rig (Multi-Tool), a custom-assembled toolkit that exemplifies the Graft aesthetic: components from multiple manufacturers, lineage-specific technology standards, and improvised connection hardware that should not work as well as it does. +1D to Technical rolls when assessing, adapting, or repackaging technology for non-original use. Additionally, once per scene as a Free Action, identify the base-layer technology standard of any device encountered, no roll required for NTC-standard hardware (it's the market standard; the Disruptor knows it); Technical vs Threshold 2 for non-standard, proprietary, or legacy hardware. This identification is actionable intelligence: knowing what standard a device runs on tells the Disruptor what can be grafted onto it, what its licensing constraints are, and roughly what a legitimate version costs versus what the Graft version will cost. The Rig is not a single tool. It is approximately seventeen tools in a configuration that only makes sense to its owner. |
Progression Track
| Stage | Perk | Source | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Syndicate Vouching | Setting AX.GIL.08.02, Faction Authority | Session |
| 2 | Deep Knowledge | AX.C.09.02, Expertise | Scene |
| 3 | Mastery (Technical) | AX.C.09.02, Expertise | Full Rest |
Stage 1, Syndicate Vouching: Invoke NVS network standing to open NVS-affiliated vendor networks (including supply chains for components that are technically on restricted lists in the local jurisdiction), one safe house, and one logistics channel. Creates an obligation in the NVS ledger. For a Market Disruptor, Syndicate Vouching most often unlocks component supply chains, the 15% premium vendor access is specifically relevant to a professional whose work requires sourcing parts that standard commercial channels do not carry together. Once per session.
Stage 2, Deep Knowledge: Once per scene, before making a Talent roll, ask the GM one specific, direct question about the task, target, or environment. For a Market Disruptor, this most often precedes a Technical assessment roll: "What is the core function that makes this device worth nine thousand credits, and which component implements it?" or "Is the licensing restriction on this technology actively enforced by the NTC, or is it legacy language from a prior version that no one has updated?", information that determines whether the adaptation is a two-day project or a two-week one.
Stage 3, Mastery (Technical): Once per Full Rest, after making a Technical roll, reroll any dice in the pool showing 1, 2, or 3. Keep new results. Wild Die may be rerolled this way. For a Market Disruptor, this most often applies to the adaptation assessment roll that determines whether the Graft version is viable at the target price point, the roll that decides whether this project becomes a product.
Roleplay Notes
The Market Disruptor's professional relationship with other orgs is consistently adversarial and consistently profitable. The NTC considers them a Certification Flag waiting to happen and a significant source of EULA violations; they are also one of the NTC's largest indirect revenue sources, because the Graft version runs on NTC-standard substrate and pays NTC licensing fees even at 60-credit retail. The BVHI finds their use of Song-Smithed materials outside original specification specifications troubling and invoices for it when possible. The LGT sends strongly-worded contractual objections on a quarterly basis.
None of this slows them down.
Their Lore investment is commercial rather than historical, understanding the market intelligence that determines whether a technology is worth adapting (who is currently paying nine thousand credits for it, what problem it solves that forty credits can also solve, and what the competitive landscape looks like six months after the Graft version launches). A Market Disruptor who is technically proficient but commercially naive produces excellent adaptations that no one buys.
The Graft Rig's aesthetic is the character's professional identity made physical. It is assembled from the best components available regardless of origin, configured for the work at hand rather than for appearances, and it functions. That it looks improvised is a feature; it signals that the person carrying it cares about what it does, not what it looks like.
Unaffiliated Template
Freelance: A Freelance Market Disruptor sells technology adaptation services to clients who need a Graft version of something without NVS institutional involvement, organizations that cannot be associated with EULA violations, entities that want the adaptation but not the NVS's commercial network tracking what they've built. Syndicate Vouching becomes Open Market Standing (independent engineering credentials that open component supply chains without NVS account access). Mastery at Stage 3 remains unchanged, technical capability is entirely portable.
Outcast: A Market Disruptor who has been commercially blacklisted by the NVS, typically after an adaptation that crossed a line the Syndicate could not defend. They retain full technical capability; NVS vendor networks are closed to them, and the NVS Priority Network no longer accepts their credentials. Ghost Credentials may still work on older NVS supply chain systems. Institutional Memory covers the specific adaptation techniques the NVS considers proprietary, which they absolutely do, regardless of what the Disruptor thinks about that.
Rapid-Response Merc
"The engagement window is approximately eight seconds. That's enough."
Role: NVS security specialists who provide high-intensity, brief-duration physical security services, the commercial expression of Human alpha-strike combat philosophy. The Rapid-Response Merc does not win through endurance or positioning; they win by making the first eight seconds so decisive that there is no need for a ninth.
| Favored Save | Body, combat endurance; absorbing physical trauma during an engagement that is designed to be short but is occasionally not; the specific durability that comes from a profession where tactical failure means taking damage that was meant for someone else |
| Power Access | None, the Rapid-Response Merc's capability is physical, tactical, and the deliberate optimization of Human biology's peak output; the Adrenaline Surge Lineage Perk is the central mechanical expression of their professional identity |
| Key Talents | Strike (Body), Athletics (Body), Fortitude (Body) |
| Signature Focus | Tactical "Burn" Suit, a purpose-built close-quarters combat garment that integrates stimulant delivery, impact-absorption plating, and an acceleration assist system designed specifically around the Adrenaline Surge response. +1 Armor (physical damage reduction, always active). When Adrenaline Surge is declared and used, the Suit's integrated systems activate: the acceleration assist provides +1D on all rolls made with the Surge's additional Primary Action, the bonus action is faster, harder, and more precise than the character's normal output because the Suit is helping. This bonus applies only to rolls made with the Surge's extra action, not all rolls on that Turn. The stimulant reservoir requires resupply after every four combat engagements (tracked by the GM); after depletion, the Suit provides Armor only until resupplied from NVS logistics. |
Progression Track
| Stage | Perk | Source | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Syndicate Vouching | Setting AX.GIL.08.02, Faction Authority | Session |
| 2 | Combat Rhythm | AX.C.09.02, Tactical | Scene |
| 3 | Signature Move | AX.C.09.02, Tactical | Full Rest |
Stage 1, Syndicate Vouching: Invoke NVS network standing for the session, vendor access, safe house, logistics channel. Creates an obligation. For a Rapid-Response Merc, Syndicate Vouching most often unlocks equipment resupply (the 15% premium vendor access includes tactical equipment and Burn Suit resupply components that standard commercial channels require licensing for) or the safe house (a secure post-engagement location where a Merc can bring protected personnel without creating a traceable record). Once per session.
Stage 2, Combat Rhythm: After a successful attack that deals at least 1 Health damage, the next attack this Turn gains +1D. This bonus does not carry between Turns. For a Rapid-Response Merc, Combat Rhythm is the mechanical expression of the alpha-strike engagement pattern, the first hit creates the opening, the second hit closes it. Combined with Adrenaline Surge (two Primary Actions on the opening Turn), a Stage 2 Merc has a Turn structure of: first attack, Combat Rhythm bonus on second attack, Surge's additional action for a third. This is the eight-second engagement model operating at peak.
Stage 3, Signature Move: Declare before making an attack. If the attack hits and deals damage, apply one Condition of choice (GM approval) appropriate to the attack type in addition to normal damage, at Minor severity, no Save permitted. For a Rapid-Response Merc: Stunned (the definitive incapacitation that ends the engagement for that target), Prone (enabling Combat Rhythm on the follow-up as an Exploit Opening bonus), or Frightened (psychological conclusion to an engagement before it fully develops). Once per Full Rest.
Roleplay Notes
The Rapid-Response Merc understands engagement mathematics, the ratio of force applied to duration determines outcome, and the optimal ratio is maximum force, minimum duration. Every second a security engagement continues is a second for the situation to develop in ways that were not planned for. The Merc's job is to prevent those seconds from existing.
Their three-Body-Talent investment is unusual in a setting where Wit governs most professional functions. This is intentional, the Rapid-Response Merc is the NVS profession that has optimized entirely for a physical domain, and that specialization is the source of both their professional value and their professional limitations. Outside an active security engagement, they are in a Wit-heavy commercial environment where their comparative advantage does not apply.
The Burn Suit's Surge-action bonus makes the Adrenaline Surge Lineage Perk the most mechanically significant single ability this character possesses. A Stage 2+ Merc on their Surge Turn has: two Primary Actions (Surge), Combat Rhythm bonus on the second attack, +1D on the Surge's additional action from the Suit, and potentially Exploit Opening if the first action creates a Condition. The engagement window is eight seconds. This is why.
Human Lineage Interaction: The Adrenaline Surge Lineage Perk is the defining capability for this profession. The Burn Suit is designed around it specifically. A non-Human Rapid-Response Merc without Adrenaline Surge is mechanically functional, Combat Rhythm and Signature Move still work, but they lose the Burn Suit's activation bonus and the central engagement-opening Turn structure that defines the profession's combat philosophy. GMs should note this in character creation discussions with non-Human players interested in the Merc profession.
Stim-Pack interaction: A Human Rapid-Response Merc who also carries the Stim-Pack Focus (AX.GIL.08.01, applicable only if they have acquired Harmonic Tradition access) gains additional Adrenaline Surge flexibility, while the Stim-Pack is active, Surge may be declared as a Minor Action rather than a Free Action. This is a rare character build (requiring both a Harmonic Tradition and the Stim-Pack, plus NVS affiliation), but it is mechanically coherent and thematically extreme.
Unaffiliated Template
Mercenary: The most natural expression, a Rapid-Response Merc without NVS affiliation is, definitionally, a mercenary. Licensed Contractor status at Stage 1 replaces Syndicate Vouching with independent credentials that open the same commercial security market without NVS network obligations. Scope of Engagement at Stage 2 formalizes per-contract authority. Reputation Ledger at Stage 3 is the delivery record that determines what clients they can access, a Stage 3 Rapid-Response Merc with a strong Reputation Ledger has a client base that includes all five orgs.
Off-Grid: A Rapid-Response Merc with no commercial registration, no professional license, and no data trail. They take cash contracts. They do not leave documentation. The engagements they conduct officially did not happen. Data Shadow at Stage 1 reflects the absence from org monitoring that makes this viable; The Void at Stage 3 is the operational disappearance that follows a completed contract.
