Tectonic Harmonics
Tectonic Harmonics
Default Attribute: Body
Lore
Dwarven magic is not subtle. It does not whisper to reality; it reasons with it.
The deep earth does not change quickly. Tectonic shifts take millennia. Minerals form over geological time. The Dwarven understanding of Harmonics evolved to match this pace, a tradition built on the principle that all matter has a True Weight: a specific harmonic signature that encodes its structural history, its tolerances, and its purpose. Song-Smithing is the art of hearing that signature clearly enough to work with it rather than against it.
In practical terms, this makes Tectonic Harmonics the most physically demanding of the Traditions. Where an Elf practices Temporal Harmonics through stillness and patience, a Dwarf practices Tectonic through contact, pressure, and resonance, humming at a frequency until the material responds. Senior practitioners often describe being able to "hear" structural stress the way humans hear a wrong musical note.
Tectonic Harmonics is Body-governed by default, which distinguishes it from every other Tradition and makes it the domain where Dwarf practitioners have a significant mechanical advantage. A Dwarf investing in Body for combat and durability is simultaneously investing in their magical domain; there is no tension between physical and arcane development.
Mechanics Summary
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Default Attribute | Body |
| Action Type | Primary (most effects); Minor (passive sensing) |
| Signature Feel | Physical contact often required; effects are durable and literal; Tectonic rolls feel like labor, not performance |
| Power Access | BVHI Seismic Engineer, Material Fabricator (Professions); Clancorp-sponsored apprenticeship |
| Signature Focus | The Tuning Fork |
Contact Requirement: Most Tectonic Harmonics effects require the practitioner to be in physical contact with the subject (Touch range) unless a Focus is being used. The Tuning Fork extends effective range to Near for sensing effects and maintains physical-touch for modification effects. This is a Tradition property, not a Friction restriction.
Philosophies
Song-Smithing
The magic of material transformation.
Song-Smithing is the master application of Tectonic Harmonics, the ability to alter the properties of materials at the harmonic level. Where a Gnomish Logic-Binder inscribes function into silicon, a Song-Smith reconfigures the molecular signature of matter itself: making steel lighter, alloys self-healing, stone magnetic, or carbon harder than diamond.
The material remains itself, iron stays iron, but its internal harmonic structure is rewritten to express different properties. The change is real and permanent until a counter-harmonic is applied.
Challenge Applications:
- Harden a material beyond its natural tolerance: +1 to the effective armor value of worked metal, stone, or composite material (Threshold 2; duration: permanent)
- Reduce the density of a material without reducing its structural strength: practical application is materials that are lighter than expected for their size (Threshold 3; permanent; standard application for BVHI's "Impossible Materials")
- Inscribe self-repair harmonics into an object: it slowly recovers from damage or wear toward its original form (Threshold 3; passive, ongoing; used in Smart-Concrete)
- Create Runic-Steel: combine hardening, weight reduction, and one additional property, conductivity, thermal resistance, etc. (Threshold 4; requires the Tuning Fork and an extended work period of at least one hour)
- Alter elemental affinity: make stone permeable to specific frequencies, make metal resistant to a damage type, make crystal record harmonic signatures (Threshold 4–5; this is advanced Clancorp-restricted technique)
Scaling: Excess successes may be allocated to permanence (remove the need for the practitioner to maintain proximity), additional properties (+1 effect per 2 excess successes), or quality (the material becomes a masterwork item with +1D on relevant Craft or combat rolls).
Backlash: The practitioner's own body is treated as material, Minor: the practitioner's skin temporarily hardens and their Speed is reduced by 1D for the scene (they are slow and rigid); Moderate: a random piece of equipment they are wearing or carrying has its properties altered negatively (GM choice, weapon becomes brittle, armor becomes heavier); Severe: the practitioner's dominant hand briefly undergoes partial stone-formation, 1D6 Health damage and their Strike and Craft Talents are reduced by 2D until they receive a Long Rest.
Deep-Read
The magic of structural perception.
Where Archive reads history, Deep-Read reads engineering. A practitioner using Deep-Read perceives the current structural state of materials, terrain, and built environments with clarity that no instrument can match. They can identify stress fractures invisible to the eye, hear the harmonic difference between solid bedrock and a hollow space, sense tectonic movement days before it registers on equipment, and locate specific materials or mineral deposits by their harmonic signature.
BVHI Seismic Engineers use Deep-Read to survey construction sites before breaking ground. Vault-Security Auditors use it to find structural weaknesses in facilities they are hardening, or penetrating.
Challenge Applications:
- Identify the structural integrity of a building, vehicle, or object, locate cracks, weak points, and failure thresholds (Threshold 1; Minor Action while in contact)
- Detect hollow spaces, tunnels, or voids through solid material up to the practitioner's Body value in meters (Threshold 2; requires concentration for one full Turn)
- Sense the composition and quality of a material, identify alloys, detect contaminants, determine if a substance has been Song-Smithed (Threshold 2)
- Locate a specific mineral or material type within Far range, sensing its direction and approximate mass (Threshold 3)
- Sense active tectonic stress and predict surface disruption events: minor tremors (Threshold 2, hours advance notice), significant events (Threshold 4, days advance notice)
- Locate a living creature by their body's harmonic signature through solid material, stone, metal, or earth, within Near range (Threshold 3; this cannot penetrate Halfling Burrow-State Dead Zones)
Scaling: Excess successes increase range by one Band per success or increase the precision of the information received.
Backlash: The practitioner's perception inverts, Minor: Disadvantage on all Notice checks for the scene as structural harmonics bleed into sensory input; Moderate: the practitioner perceives a catastrophic structural failure that is not happening, they must pass a Wit Save vs Threshold 2 at the start of each Turn or take a Panic action (Sprint away from the perceived collapse); Severe: a real, minor structural failure occurs in the immediate environment (hairline fractures expand, a support shifts, not catastrophic, but the GM should make the room feel less safe).
True-Weight
The magic of understanding purpose.
Every manufactured object was made to do something. Tectonic Harmonics practitioners learn that this purpose is not merely functional; it is encoded in the object's harmonic signature as clearly as its material composition. True-Weight is the Philosophy of reading and interacting with that encoded purpose.
In practice, this has two primary applications: understanding what an object was made to do (even if its current form is damaged or disguised) and imposing a harmonic authority, a "True Name" declaration, over an object in a contested situation.
Challenge Applications:
- Identify the original purpose of an unknown device, mechanism, or construction, regardless of damage, disguise, or age (Threshold 1–3 depending on complexity and obscurity)
- Determine if an object has been Song-Smithed or otherwise harmonically altered from its original state, and by whom (Threshold 2)
- Declare the True-Weight of a mechanism: it performs its original function correctly, even if damaged, a jammed lock opens, a misfiring weapon fires true, a cracked structural beam holds (Threshold 2–4 depending on severity; lasts one use or one scene)
- Contest the harmonic ownership of an object: in a contested situation where another practitioner is using an object against its original purpose (hacking a vault, rerouting infrastructure), impose Disadvantage on their roll by asserting its True-Weight (Threshold 3; contested against their Harmonic roll)
- Identify a Tectonic Harmonic trap, failsafe, or embedded Backlash charge in a structure or device (Threshold 2 to detect; Threshold 4 to safely neutralize)
Scaling: Excess successes on a True-Weight declaration extend its duration or increase the strength of the contestation penalty.
Backlash: The practitioner loses their own sense of purpose, Minor: they experience brief dissociation and cannot voluntarily use Tactics or Lore for the scene; Moderate: they cannot identify the function of any non-obvious device or mechanism for the rest of the scene; Severe: one object of the GM's choice that the practitioner is carrying or wearing loses all harmonic coherence, it becomes mundane and stops functioning if it relied on Song-Smithing or other Harmonic inscriptions.
Foundation
The magic of immovability.
Foundation is the defensive and tactical expression of Tectonic Harmonics. The practitioner establishes a harmonic anchor between themselves, a subject, or a location and the bedrock beneath, an expression of the Dwarven principle that the deepest thing wins. Foundation effects are about stillness, resistance to force, and the imposition of structural will on an environment.
In combat, Foundation is why Dwarven soldiers don't dodge; they don't need to. In engineering, Foundation is how BVHI guarantees that structures built on their Tectonic-Resonanced foundations do not move, ever, for anything short of a nuclear strike.
Challenge Applications:
- Ground yourself: gain Advantage on saves against being moved, knocked Prone, Stunned, or Restrained for the scene (Threshold 2; requires contact with a solid surface)
- Anchor an object to its current position, treat it as if it weighs ten times its actual mass for purposes of moving it (Threshold 2–3 depending on object size; duration: scene)
- Establish a Foundation Point: a location within Touch range becomes harmonically reinforced, treat it as Full Cover for structural purposes, and any creature sheltering there has +1 Defense (Threshold 3; duration: scene; the point does not move)
- Prevent a structure from collapsing: temporarily stabilize a building, tunnel, or vehicle that is actively failing (Threshold 3–4 depending on severity; buys 1D6 Turns of additional stability)
- Execute a Seismic Slam: channel Foundation energy into a targeted strike, a Primary Action melee attack that, on hit, triggers a Body Save vs Threshold 3 for the target or they are knocked Prone and cannot stand until the start of their next Turn (Threshold to hit: standard Defense; damage: normal Strike + Tradition dice as damage dice)
Scaling: Excess successes on a defensive Foundation extend its duration or increase the Defense bonus. On Seismic Slam, excess successes may push the target one Range Band away instead of knocking Prone.
Backlash: The Foundation turns to quicksand, Minor: the practitioner's own feet are temporarily anchored; they cannot move from their current position until they succeed on a Body Save vs Threshold 2 (attempted each Turn); Moderate: a Foundation Point collapses into a sinkhole, any creature within Close range makes a Speed Save vs Threshold 2 or falls Prone; Severe: the practitioner is fully Anchored, treated as a fixed object, completely immobile, for 1D6 Turns, taking 2D6 bludgeoning damage as the harmonic force inverts.
The Tuning Fork (Tectonic Focus)
A dense alloy rod, Song-Smithed to resonate at the fundamental frequency of the Earth's harmonic layer. The tone it produces when struck is inaudible to most non-Dwarven lineages, but practitioners hear it as a chord that resolves the harmonic noise of the environment and sharpens the signal dramatically.
Mechanical Effect: Grants +2D to Deep-Read and True-Weight rolls. Additionally, extends the Contact Requirement for all Tectonic Harmonics effects to Near range, the practitioner no longer needs to physically touch a subject for non-modification effects (Song-Smithing and Foundation's Seismic Slam still require Touch).
Availability: Standard BVHI issue to Seismic Engineers at journeyman rank. Civilian versions are commercially available through Clancorp retail at significant cost. Forged forks of different alloy compositions exist for specialized applications, rare-earth tuning forks can target specific mineral types with Deep-Read or work with otherwise-impossible materials in Song-Smithing.
Example Rolls
The party needs to move through a collapsed BVHI tunnel. Brak, a Dwarf with Body 4D + Tectonic Harmonics 3D (Deep-Read Focus 2D + Tuning Fork) needs to assess the situation.
Roll 1, Structural assessment (Deep-Read, Threshold 2):
Pool: Body 4D + Tectonic Harmonics 3D + Deep-Read Focus 2D = 9D + 2D from Tuning Fork = 11D.
Status: Clear. Result: 5 successes.
Exceeds Threshold by 3, Brak identifies every stress fracture, the location of the nearest hollow space (a survivor pocket, 15 meters ahead), and the specific point where a Song-Smithing intervention would stabilize the passage.
Status after roll: Stressed.
Roll 2, Stabilize passage (Foundation, Threshold 3):
Pool: Body 4D + Tectonic Harmonics 3D = 7D at Disadvantage.
Status: Stressed.
Result: 2 successes (two sixes). Falls short of Threshold 3. Failure, the tunnel does not collapse immediately (the Deep-Read information is still valid), but Brak cannot stabilize it this way. They may need a different approach or a rest before attempting again.
